The best way to find the mystery country is triangulation: a central first guess gives a direction, a second guess along that direction gives a second distance, and the answer lies where the two distances meet.
A good first guess
Choose a country near the middle of the world map, such as one in Central Asia, the Middle East or North Africa. From there, every arrow points into a broad region and the distance tells you roughly which continent you need.
Triangulate
Imagine a circle around your guess with a radius equal to the distance shown. Make your second guess far away from the first but near that circle. The two circles usually cross in one or two places — the answer is close to one of them.
Read the percentage
The proximity score drops by one point for every 200 km. A score above 90% means you are within about 2,000 km; above 97% means a neighbour or near-neighbour.
Know the limits
Distances use the approximate centre of each country. Large countries such as Russia, Canada or Brazil have centres far from their borders, so a neighbouring country can still be thousands of kilometres away from their centre.
